Do your students wonder why they should study English in college?

My name is Nathan Bayer. I am the current president of the Milwaukee-Area Student Affiliate of NCTE (MASA), and I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself and also tell you about an exciting English outreach program that is very near and dear to me.

During MASA’s inaugural year (2014-15), we worked very hard to determine how our 90 members could be of service to students and teachers of English in the greater Milwaukee area.  At one of our monthly meetings, I shared a project idea that I had had for a long time: Why Study English.

Designed as an outreach program, Why Study English brings MASA members — primarily current college students, faculty, and staff — into local high schools to share with students the beauty and benefits of studying English in and beyond the classroom.  During a Why Study English presentation, we talk to students about what they can expect from college English courses, how studying English can help make them better writers and more desirable job candidates, and how English courses and extracurriculars can help them have a well-rounded college experience.

In all, Why Study English advocates for college English in all its forms, whether students choose to major or minor in English, take English electives, or simply become a friend to English on their campuses and in their communities. Directed primarily toward juniors and seniors in high school, Why Study English can benefit all students, from those studying AP English to those still deciding about college.

If you are interested in hosting a Why Study English presentation, and your school is within the Milwaukee area, please contact me online  at damerhetorica.wix.com/masa#!contact/c1etWhy Study English presentations take from 30 to 90 minutes, including a variety of discussions and activities.  We would be thrilled to speak to an individual class or to a student assembly.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to me so that we can schedule a time for MASA to answer the all important question on many students’ minds: Why Study English?
